Common Concerns
Today's society and expansive media outlets have pushed a false image of what Fraternity life truly means. Below we would like to debunk any initial thoughts or beliefs that would inhibit your decision of approaching Greek Life.
01
A Fraternity Has Nothing to Offer Me
The benefits of being in a fraternity are a direct result of what you put into it. There are no other opportunities available to college men that offer the breadth and depth of real-life learning and leadership than that of the fraternity experience. As you will see, if you continue on, the majority of us in Delta Sig did not want to join a fraternity when we came to college. This trait and many others have shaped the culture of our brotherhood in awesome ways, and we are interested in anyone who wants to become a better man by being a part of it.
02
Hazing
Delta Sigma Phi has a zero tolerance policy for hazing. Anyone who hazes, or allows himself to be hazed, is not worthy of being a Delta Sig. Our mission is to be a true fraternity of gentlemen starts with our commitment to create and foster respect trough constructive means.
03
I Don't Have the Money
Yes, there is a financial obligation to joining a Fraternity. How we operate helps our members understand financial responsibility, something that you can't necessarialy learn in the classroom. What most dont understand is how it is broken down. Currently, our Dues are $300 a semester. $195 of this goes to the National Office for national programming, chapter liability insurance for events, and industry professionals support in organization development behavior and leadership training. The other $105 goes to the operation fund of the chapter so that we may host events, pay registration fees for intermural sports, buy chapter shirts, and support other outlets of fun such as alumni events, brotherhood events and dinners, and formals and mixers with other sororities or organizations,
04
I Don't Need to Buy My Friends
This is the oldest concern in the book, and the most flawed with what Delta Sigma Phi believes in. We belive in Friendship as one of our core values. We work to develop friendships with all people, not just our own brotherhood. We do not want to assimilate a man into our brotherhood if we are not friends first. As stated above, the money is only allocated for chapter functions, operations, and administrative costs. Club Sports have fees, Intramural sports have fees, the Boys Scouts have fees. Think of it as your union to the University.
05
Opposed Parents
Prior to finding Delta Sigma Phi, many of us, as well as our parents, were anti-fraternity. What changed our minds were the people, and waht changed our parents' minds was the visible impact this commitment made in our lives. We also are starting to host a Delta Sigma Phi Parents Club so that the families of the chapter and alumni can assimilate into this great thing called Fraternity.
06
I Don't Want to Lose My GPA
The chapter has minimum standards for maintaining membership, an Academic Excellence Program, and a program to reward scholastic achievement. Currently, the Delta Omega Chapter has maintained an average GPA over .10 the All Campus Average.

All Fraternities Do is Throw Parties and Drink
False. This is a common misconception that the media has endorsed that doesnt seem to go away. The Fraternity culture isnt the problem, College culture in general has embraced the drinking culture. In fact, there are more parties at Cleveland State thrown by sports teams or assorted non-affiliated students than the Greek Organizations. We have a commitment to our university and professional lives which comes first.
Association with Negative Stereotypes
We do not want to be associated with negative fraternity stereotypes either. Delta Sigma Phi strives tos et themselves apart from the negative reputations associated with "Frats".
I Don't Have the Time
You would be expected to allocate a few hours a week to the Fraternity as an active member, but many of us enjoy spending more time than that trying to better Delta Sig. As a new member going through new member education, your time commitment is a bit higher, but it is still managable with a normal classload and other commitment (friends, work, organizations, etc.).
I Don't Want to Lose My Friends
We encourage our brothers to have relationships both inside and outside of the Fraternity; this, after all, is a social organization. Delta Sigma Phi is all about building friendships and life long bonds of brotherhood secured by Culture, Harmony, and Friendship.
